World Plays Hard in Beijing Olympics Before Games Even Begin (update 1)
As the Beijing Olympic torch made its symbolic journey across the world, many protesters spoke out against China’s human rights record and its tyrannical rule over Tibet. Yesterday China announced it would begin talks with a representative of the Dalai Lama, Tibet’s spiritual leader.
That didn’t stop protesters from making a stand today in Nagano, Japan—the torch’s final stop. Hundreds of demonstrators threw trash and flares at the passing torch. Demonstrators ranged from Buddhist monks to Japanese nationalists, who showed concern over China’s rise as a superpower. “China wants to conquer the world. I’m afraid that China will conquer Japan in the near future,” said Japanese protester Mitsuru Ishikawa. (Brisbane Times, 4/26/08)
Supporters also lined the streets, including Chinese university students who waved their country’s red flag as the torch passed by.
Four Chinese were injured, though not seriously, and five protesters were arrested for throwing objects and disrupting the procession. This was despite increased security, with 3,000 police guards to control the crowd of more than 85,000 people.
